2008 COOLSCULPT
In conjunction with Telluride Ski and Golf's SnowFest activities, 2008 CoolSculpt was a fantastic event with the 4 sculpting teams putting forth truly inspirational and creative efforts. As our panel of judges commented "It's amazing what each team accomplished with no one having any snow sculpting experience, other than the occasional snowman as a kid."
First Place with $1000 and 10 lift tickets
American National Bank sees Abby Hamblin, Telluride's public schools middle school art teacher, along with her daughter Kira (12), Genevieve Matamoros (14) and husband Brad Hamblin, create their Giant Buddha sculpture located at the top of chair 1. "The 360 degree element of how it wraps around, along with its face and the mini ice cream scooper beads individually placed on the Buddahs head, really makes for an enveloping presentation." commented the judging panel. These 2 young ladies have been invited to attend the Telluride Acadamys Mudd Butt Mystery Theater Troupe's International trip to India and were hoping to raise money for their trip. Congratulations.
Second Place with $500 and 5 lift tickets.
Telluride Mountain Village Owners Association's King Kong climbing a skyscraper, located on The Beach Plaza. This amazing feat was performed by the architect firms of Tommy Hein Architects and One Architects. Judge Bobby Murphy commented, "The juxtaposition of the squareness of the buildings and the roundness of the hanging King Kong, is really a sight to see, not to mention the tiny little cars created to add scale."
3rd place with $350 and 3 lift tickets.
Mountain Video Productions sponsors the Telluride Mountain Schools middle school/high school art classes sculpture named- 20,000 Leagues Above the Sea. This "cute" giant octopus with individual legs and suction cups was a nice first effort for Elizabeth Bowie as the schools art teacher. She quotes " This is epic, I could have never imagined how enormous a 8 foot cube of snow is and how in the world am I and the kids going to dig an octopus out of this!" Way to go for another first timer.
4th place with $150 and 3 lift tickets.
S.U.N.R.I.S.E had MD- Famous Artist, sculpting a metaphor of his life, The Abominable Snowman Surfing a Tube. As one 15 year girl commented, "That's Legit", and so many other young peoples comments washed over this hardworking artist's monument. "What a difficult maneuver to sculpt literally an endless moment of a wave", commented judge Anji Sawant. Michael Doherty (aka M.D.) also deserves special recognition for the generous help in sharing his tools with his sculpting neighbor, The Mounatin School kids, he even made the coolest custom tools for them to share.
Thanks to the Telluride's Council for the Arts and Humanities who sponsors this year's $2000 prize money.
