He also designs exterior environments with a focus on sacred alignments with an integration of landscape design with sculptural installations. He specializes in glass and stone and has had a glassblowing and sculpture studio in Santa Cruz CA for the last 15 years.

He has lived in many parts of the United States, and studied with noted artists. Currently Richard is finishing a veterans' memorial for the town of Fruita, Colorado and enjoys traveling with his wife Marshall. You can also see his work as Sophia stands at the bus stop near the Telluride Middle/High School.

His goal has been to let the kids lead the creative process in developing this project and it's a chance of a lifetime for these kids to put it all together.
American National Bank will see Beth Ballis and Ted Moews sculpting their creation, which has a preliminary design of being something really fantastic. This one is located at he top of the Meadows lift in the Mountain Village's Town Plaza. Beth has lived in the Telluride region since 1992. Although her most recognized accomplishment in the art world would be her Masters degree from Harvard University's School of Design in Landscape Architecture, she states her greatest artistic accomplishments can be attributed to the Halloween costumes she has created for her two children over the past ten years. Living a wilderness lifestyle the past 11 years which involved snowmobile/ski access only to her home 6 months of the year, she is sure to bring a fresh yet familiar perspective to snow art.
Ted started early in sculpting, he built his first log cabin when he was 13 and moved on to complete 2 degrees in fine art from the University of Denver and UCLA. Ted also has spent time cowboying/rodeoing, raising buffalo and raising a family in his hand notched log cabin at 10,000 feet.

Post-Event Coverage...
In conjunction with Telluride Mountain Village's SnowFest events this weekend this years CoolSculpt was a great success with the 5 sculpting teams really putting forth a great creative effort. 4 teams were actually competing for greater than $3000 in cash and prizes. The 5th sculpture, being the 1972 VW bus parked on the Baja with the hippie waxing down his surfboard, was created for our sponsor Las Montanas Restaurant and was not competing in that it was a larger cube 8x8x12 feet instead the standard 8x8x8 cubes. This sculpture was created by lead sculptor Tom Alpern and Andy Krueger and was a particular favorite with the ski patrol. This year's winners and sponsors of CoolSculpt 2006 are:
First Place with $1000 and 6 lift tickets
American National Bank with Beth Ballis and Ted Moews sculpting their wonder in snow named "The Ice Queen" at the top of the Meadows lift in the Mountain Village's Town Plaza. This sculpture impressed the judges by displaying a grand scale of a decorated Ice Queen on her chariot, with the details of individual incisor teeth placed in the team of polar bear pulling the chariot. In addition the face of the Queen is really well done. Thanks again to American National Bank for sponsoring a sculpture and winning the top prize 2 years in a row. Come see it at the top of the Chondolla in the Plaza near where the summer Sunset Concert series plays.
Second Place with $500 and 4 lift tickets and a night at Inn at Lost Creek
The Town of Mountain Village with the Mountain Schools middle school/high school art classes sculpting a Lions Head. Seeing this on the snow in front of chair 4's lift line, a lion with a 5 foot tongue hanging out really is cool, come on over and get a closer look. Craig Wasserman, the schools art teacher, subtly guided his approximately 20 students in their creation and developed a style in the snow that uses shadows to enhance the feeling of depth in their creation.
Third Place with $350 and 3 lift tickets
Boot Doctor had last years winning sculptor, Duncan Mackenzie, creating an evolving and interactive sculpture, "The Magic Lizard Castle". This sculpture is located near the Beach at the bottom of chair 4.
Duncan used his exceptional stone laying and outdoor space design skills to create an event in the snow. This winding igloo, snow caslte is great for the family to check out really highlights the amazing ways an 8x8x8 foot cube can be cut apart, reassembled and also reductive sculpted.
Congratulations Boot Doctor and Duncan.
Four Place with $150 and 2 lift tickets
Richard Arnold sculpted for Telski's sponsorship and created a very fun looking cross skiing troll. It is also located near the Beach at the bottom of chair 4. The troll includes the use of frozen dog dish ice for the eyes and Richard had some help from some true Scandinavian influence including Ivar Eidsmo and his visiting niece, Maya from Norway. Thanks to Richard for being a returning sculptor and being so great with all the guests asking questions.
